A unique architectural strategy must be applied when building in remote communities. Typically, entire buildings are designed to fit on trucks that transport the cargo on a 'six-week winter road' over frozen waterways and sub-tundra terrain. Building components are sized to fit on a small nine-passenger airplane in the event they need to be replaced. Finish materials are selected for durability and 'easy-to-fix' reparability. A rigorous approach to scheduling and deadlines is imperative in order for the building to be delivered within the critical 'six-week winter road' window. Likewise, the designs have to address the unique cultural situation of each community.

Our firm has prepared building projects with aboriginal and remote communities for 20 years in central, western and northern Canada. We understand the design constraints of isolated communities and how to work with them.
